She stood at the counter, her hands still shaking slightly as she poured three cups into the ceramic mugs. "It's over, isn’t it?” Cassia asked, sinking into one of the wooden chairs at the table and wrapping her hands around the warm mug. She looked between Lucian and her mother, her eyes wide with hope and exhaustion. “It's over now? No more running, no more looking over our shoulders?”

She truly believed she was the hero of this story. She turned her cold, dispassionate gaze to my brother. “Subject Zero,” she said, her voice calm and even. “Your first mission. Eliminate the intruders.” Cassian stood up from the pod. He moved with a grace and a speed that was not human. In one fluid motion, he was on the floor, and in the next, he was moving towards me. He did not fight like a man. He fought like a machine, with perfect, deadly efficiency, his face completely devoid of emotion.

Cassie stepped between Aser and Kael so fast that even Kael blinked in surprise. "I’ve been bitten, Kael," Cassie said coldly. "By my father, by my wimp of an ex-husband, and by the boy the Syndicate sent to cause me trouble, and I'm still standing. I know you've seen the numbers I make. That’s profit. That man lost money, and I make money. If the Council cares about strength, they should look at the balance sheet. If they care about bloodlines, well, that’s just a nice way of saying you’re afraid of change."

Blood streaked one side of his jaw. His eyes burned brighter than I had ever seen them. Triumphant. “Well,” he drawled, surveying the destruction. “This has been quite… spectacular.”

Cassian smirked at his handiwork, the three of them marked, limping, bonded in shared ruin, empire business fueling filthy pleasure. ‎Mid-bite, Cassian's hand snaked under the counter, groping Nagur's plump ass cheek through the sweatpants, fingers digging deep into the firm muscle, kneading the tender flesh. Nagur froze, fork halfway to mouth, then turned with heat blazing in his dark eyes. Without a word, he leaned in, crashing their mouths together in a hungry kiss, tongues tangling sloppy over bacon grease and coffee bitterness, teeth nipping lips till copper taste filled their mouth. Cassian growled into it, hand slipping inside the pants to probe that wrecked hole, two fingers plunging

"You're the one with the blood on your hands. Why should Noah get the empire and the girl while you get the blame and the guilt?" ​Cassian's breath hitched. His hands came up to her waist, not to push her away, but to steady himself. He was weak, fueled by alcohol and the crushing weight of his mother’s return. He was the perfect target for someone who knew exactly how to play on his insecurities. ​"Maeve..." he warned, but his grip on her robe tightened. ​"Let me help you forget, Cassian," she breathed, her hand sliding down to the nape of his neck, pulling him closer. "Just for a night. Let’s give the Grand Luna something else to talk about at dinner."

I muttered before a deep, familiar voice cut me off. "Is my breakfast ready, or do I need to add talking back to your punishment list?" My whole body tensed. I turned slowly to find Cassius leaning against the doorway, arms crossed, watching me with that same infuriating smirk. Damn him. When had he gotten there? I plastered on the sweetest smile I could muster. "Of course, sir. Just a moment."

“I did.” I wanted to ask more but decided against it. We were quiet for a while. I sighed contentedly when his fingers massaged my scalp, absentmindedly running through my hair. I couldn’t help but compare Orlando and Brian again. How different they were. I tipped my head to see Orlando’s eyes closed. Two of his shirt buttons were open, revealing his tan skin. His free hand rested on his chest. “I never had panic attacks before. I ruined your time with Dean, didn’t I?”

Chapter 32: Cassian's Despair Cassian paced around his room, his eyes filled with urgency. No matter the cost, he needed to win Aria back. The thought of her being with Ronan was impossible for him, and he couldn't imagine life without her. He stopped his walk and faced the mirror. His skin was pale, and his eyes were recessed. He appeared to be a basic reflection of the individual he once was. He wondered softly to himself, "What am I doing?" "I'm a ruler, and I'm allowing a simple wolf to assume my position."

"Suit yourself but you are going back to work tomorrow." "I already planned to." I said, setting my glass down. "No more hiding, I have got a board to answer to and an empire to run.
