I stared at it for a long time before making up my mind to check it out. The woman behind the counter looked up when I entered. I didn’t speak. Just pointed at the book in the window. “That one’s five,” she said. I pulled out a crumpled five-dollar bill from my pocket and handed it over. Walking home with that book felt like stealing light from the sky.

A twenty-one-year-old student crushing on the thirty-something librarian who probably saw me as just another noisy undergrad. But here I was, down in the basement stacks at almost eleven, surrounded by dusty shelves and dim overhead lights. Mr. Kane had come down to help me find one last obscure history text. We were deep in the back when everything went black. The lights cut out with a loud pop. The air conditioning hummed to a stop. Total silence. “Shit,” I muttered, gripping the book in my hands tighter. “Power outage?” Mr. Kane’s voice came from a few feet away, calm as always. “Looks like it. The whole building probably. Baby. “The Art of Seduction by Robert Greene”, I whispered as I handed the book to the shop keeper absent-mindedly. “I’ll give you Four Thousand Naira for the 2009 Guinness Book of World Records, One Thousand Seven Hundred Naira for the novel and Two Thousand Naira for The Art of Seduction. We haggled for a while, and I turned to leave the shop and the shop keeper, so he could keep his books to himself. I stepped out of the book shop and walked two steps from the entrance, when he rushed towards me pleading.
