Of course I dared. When a person was pushed to the edge, there was nothing left to fear. Clutching Miss Zabel's greasy, $350,000 check, I rushed straight to the meeting spot. A few rough-looking men surrounded my mother, cursing and spitting as they stood over her. My mother was curled up in the corner. This woman, who was once so proud and confident, now had streaks of gray in her hair and a face hollowed by exhaustion.

I looked up; his hazel eyes were locked on me, intense and unreadable. “You’re not alone tonight,” he murmured, so quiet it almost got lost in the rain. The vibe shifted. Suddenly the air felt heavy, electric, like the storm had moved indoors. Jordan moved closer, deliberate. “Know what’s better than solo p**n?” His voice dropped, rougher. I let out a nervous laugh. “A threesome with my two super gay best friends?” It was meant as sarcasm. The running joke I’d tossed out for years (Sophie and her untouchable gay duo, always the third wheel).

Argghhh I can't lose this job, at least not yet. Mama's illness needs money. I walk out of my desk and halt halfway to the elevator. Who's supposed to replace me when I leave here? Where am I supposed to find Regina? Still thinking, the sound of heels on the hard floor gets my attention. A brunette walks to me boldly, her heels seem to do a great job on her height, her curves so obvious from her short jade gown. She blows a bubble from the gum in her mouth and there is a loud sound from it. "Stop staring at me like that, it's obnoxious" she rolls her eyes.
