He nodded slowly, flipping open a worn ledger. "Blackwood, eh? Heard about the estate troubles in the papers. Glad that's sorted." He scribbled something, then tore off a slip of paper—a visitor's pass, I guessed. Handing it to me, he added, "Stick to the paths; some spots are uneven. And if you need anything, holler. I'm Earl, by the way."
"Thanks, Earl," I said, taking the pass. It was a simple thing, printed on yellowed stock, but his small talk eased the tension a bit. "Been here long?"
