Julise produced a fan from her sleeve with a magician’s flourish, the ivory ribs clicking together like bones.
“Lesson one,” she announced, snapping it open with a sound like a knife leaving its sheath, “how to murder someone while making the witnesses applaud.”
I caught the fan she tossed at me, surprised by its weight. The delicate-looking ribs were cold steel, the silk panels woven with something that glinted sharply in the low light.
“Charming,” I said, testing the edge with my thumb. It came away with a thin red line.
Julise grinned. “Isn’t it just? Now watch.”
