Theme: Welcome to the Afterlife, part 2 [The Toture]. "Welcome to the Afterlife, Rey Reed Smith." I heard the female voice once again. Deliberately, I began to open my eyes. At first, it was blurred. Everybody in the room is looking like a double luminary in my eyes. My head is banging badly. Not only that, I discovered that I was dangling upside beneath. My leg was attached to the awning while my head was shaking around. Before I could discern what was going on, I felt two heavy punches land on my abdomen, which prompted me to vomit blood. My eyes snapped open instantly and my vision became clear.

I was not trying to impress my brother. After dinner, we watched a horror flick in the movie house. I loved horror films, but then again, I usually slept in a room with two other girls in it. I didn’t have to worry about the boogeyman hiding under the bed. But it was too late. I had already chosen the movie before I realized I now slept in an almost empty estate. Zachary noticed my grim expression as we were lining up for popcorn. “Are you okay?” he asked. I nodded. “Yeah. Something just crossed my mind.”

Her eyes glistened with fear. “If something happens to you…” “It won’t,” he whispered back. “I’m not leaving you again.” Marek suddenly froze mid-step. “Wait.” “What?” Lucian asked. Marek pointed at the security camera feed. “Someone else is outside the penthouse door.” Elara’s breath hitched. “Adrian?” Marek squinted. “No… it’s a woman.” Selene narrowed her eyes. “A woman? The Hales don’t use women in extraction teams.”

It was also my birthday, but no one remembered it. Marco and the others left and locked the door. The basement was plunged into darkness. Only my corpse silently lay there, but my soul could see everything. I saw the hidden camera flashing red in the ventilation duct. It was recording everything, transmitting it to the cloud storage I had preset. The password was 0713—the day I met Calvin Simmon. How ridiculous. Even my password in this act of revenge was related to him. What was even more ridiculous was that my soul drifted into the banquet hall, where I saw Calvin in a black suit standing beside Susan, looking at her tenderly. Dad's hair turned gray overnight, and Mom lost her mind. They sold the villa and lived in that dark basement, spending their days guarding my portrait in the filth. And every year on my birthday, two aged figures would always appear at the cemetery by the seaside without fail. They would kneel before a joint grave, weeping uncontrollably while staring at the tombstone bearing both my name and Katrina's name. Romance is bad enough without doing it beside a display tag that says EASY ASSEMBLY, TWO PERSONS REQUIRED. They burst through the doors into late afternoon light with half the showroom following at a deeply unimpressive but still stressful pace. Eli and Maya hold the entrance long enough for Priya and Tessa to reverse the trucks. Miles shoots crossbow bolts with insane accuracy. Pete throws a lamp at a corpse and hits it in the face. “Was that on the list?” Priya shouts. “Cheerful and not haunted,” Maya yells. “Debatable!” They make it back through the gate at dusk. Trucks loaded. Teams intact.

"There's no need. I'm not fortunate enough to accept your love. "We're not right for each other. You should find someone who's a better match for you." Without another word, she hurried away as though escaping from him. Joshua, already unsteady from the alcohol, pursued her without a second thought. He watched her cross the street and rushed after her without even looking. At that exact moment, a speeding van came barreling toward him out of control. A deafening crash split the night. Joshua was thrown to the ground, his body landing in a spreading pool of blood.

I was starting to think there wasn’t much left of humanity to save. We had just returned from a mission that had gone horribly wrong. We’d been ambushed by the infected halfway through securing an old supply cache, and though we had made it out alive, it hadn’t been without cost. Two soldiers—men I’d worked with for weeks, men I had shared meals and conversations with—hadn’t made it back. The air in the base was heavy with grief. Everyone moved like ghosts, their shoulders slumped, their eyes dull. Even Ethan seemed quieter than usual, his face drawn tight with the weight of command.

Ariel sent her a quick WhatsApp message saying they were leaving, then she and Janice left in Chad's car. Once inside, Chad glanced back at them. "Was it fun?" Janice replied listlessly, "After Ari left, I didn't stay around for long. I had too much to drink. I didn't shower or remove my makeup. I just passed out on the bed. "Now all I have is a pounding headache instead of good memories." Suddenly, Janice recalled something. She directed her gaze to Ariel. "You didn't come back to your room last night?" Ariel looked at her blankly. "What?"

Meekey whispered. “I didn’t do it for you,” Tasha said. “I did it because she deserves closure—one way or another.” The line went dead. Later that afternoon, Maya made her way to the café near Jefferson Park. She sat by the window, sipping coffee she didn’t want, waiting. She had seen a picture of Zoe once smiling beside Natalie on a community newsletter website. Black braids. Sharp jawline. Big hoop earrings and a stare that said don’t mess with me unless you mean it.
