Pushing through the undergrowth, I stumbled blindly forward, propelled by sheer adrenaline.
Suddenly, a whimper broke through the symphony of forest sounds. A soft, pathetic whimper that sent a shiver down my spine. Fear momentarily forgotten, I followed the sound, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs.
There, huddled beneath a gnarled oak, sat a girl. A girl no older than ten, with hair as dark as the encroaching night and eyes that held a haunting emptiness. Her clothes were ragged, her face streaked with dirt, and her stomach growled loudly, a stark reminder of hunger.
