Her voice cracked on the last word, high and shrill. It grated against my skull like nails on a chalkboard. Annoying. So damn annoying. I missed Seraphine, the way she used to look at me with quiet devotion, never questioning, never demanding. Maribel was nothing like that. She was loud, needy, a tool I'd picked up when convenient.
