He had left me the map to the one place Pierce could never go. The fluorescent lights of the interrogation room hummed with a sound that felt like a drill inside my skull. I sat on the cold metal chair, my wrists still aching from the cuffs they had only just removed. Detective Miller leaned across the table, his shadow stretching long and jagged against the cinderblock wall. He didn’t look like a lawman; he looked like a predator waiting for me to trip over my own feet. "Now, Miss Riley," he said. “Mr. Adrian.” Dante looked up. Detective Miller stood before him, still holding his small notebook, his expression worn with the fatigue of a city steeped in crime. Behind him stood a well-dressed man with a federal badge clipped to his belt. “Detective,” Dante greeted shortly. “Marco’s still unconscious. Miller smiled back at him confidently and Nadia could feel the current passing between the two men for an instant. “Not at all. Mr. Miller here works with the government. My heightened senses picked up on every word. “Any updates on the Miller case, Sarah?” my father asked. “We’re sending the evidence to the lab for testing,” Officer Gomez replied. “We should have results soon.” “Good,” my father said. “We need to move quickly on this. The public is demanding answers.” “We’re doing everything we can, Jared,” Officer Gomez reassured him. “I know, Sarah,” my father sighed. “It’s just… all the evidence points to….” His voice trailed off. “All the evidence points to Darryl,” Officer Gomez finished for him.
