The Child Who Wasn’t
I wanted to see how long she could hold out.
On the sixth day, just as Maisie and I entered the bathroom, Phoebe collapsed and yanked open the bathroom door. She fell to her knees and screamed, "Stop the baths! I'm begging you! Please stop!"
I was surprised. I had estimated a child could last maybe three days under such torment, but Phoebe had held out for six.
Later, I tucked Maisie back into her room and returned to face Phoebe in the living room. My voice was cold as ice. "Who are you?"
