Before Elena could respond, her phone rang. She hesitated, staring at the screen — Damien.
Her hands shook as she answered.
“Elena,” his deep voice came through, cold and accusing. “Was this deliberate?”
Her brows furrowed. “What—?”
“If you’re not at the Salvatore mansion in thirty minutes,” he snapped, “don’t bother coming ever again.”
The line went dead.
Elena stared blankly at the phone, her lips trembling. Then she remembered — tonight was his parents’ wedding anniversary. He had told her to attend as his wife.
