The defender cried out in shock and pain as he fell. Jacob didn’t hesitate. He reached the third traitor in an instant, grabbed his head with both hands, and twisted violently. A sickening crack echoed inside the tent as the traitor’s neck broke. His body dropped lifeless to the floor next to the others. All three traitors lay dead in quick succession, their blood staining the tent floor in dark, glistening pools. The loyal guards and defenders inside the tent watched in stunned silence, their faces hardening with fresh resolve.

The posture of someone who'd been carrying weight too long. Almost relieved to set it down. Alisha found me at the window. "Blood means something different to everyone," she said quietly. I looked at her. "Val's pack blood. Joshua's father's blood. Cole's betrayal blood." She paused. "Yours and mine. Cousin blood. Silvermoon blood." "All of it counts?" "All of it." She nodded. "Even the betrayal. Because it shows us who stays." I looked at her. "You stayed."
