Expiration Dates Book Novels & Stories

I just finished reading 'Expiration Dates' and was blown away by the writing style, so I dug into the author's background. The novel is written by Rebecca Serle, who's become one of my favorite contemporary writers. She has this incredible talent for blending magical realism with deep emotional storytelling. Before 'Expiration Dates,' she wrote 'In Five Years,' which wrecked me in the best possible way - it's about a woman who experiences five years of her future in one hour. Serle also created 'The Dinner List,' where a woman celebrates her birthday with five people from her past (alive or dead). Her YA series 'Famous in Love' was adapted into a TV show, proving her versatility across genres. What I love is how she makes supernatural concepts feel painfully human.

I haven't actually read the whole book, just flicked through it in a bookstore once. It struck me as way more scientific than those magazine articles that just tell you to smell the milk. It digs into why a sell-by date isn't the same as a use-by date, which is something I always found confusing. The book breaks down the factors that actually cause spoilage – moisture, temperature, enzymes, that kind of thing – rather than just giving a list of arbitrary dates.

What stuck with me was the section on pantry staples. I always threw out flour and spices after a year, feeling vaguely guilty. The book explained how oils go rancid through oxidation and how whole grains have a shorter life because of their germ. It made me feel less like I was just being wasteful and more like I was finally understanding the chemistry in my own kitchen. I was hunting for a physical copy of 'Expiration Dates' last month and found it's still primarily an ebook/audiobook from what I could tell. The author, Rebecca Serle, seems to have a deal with Amazon Publishing for that title, so print copies aren't widely distributed through regular bookstores. I checked Barnes & Noble and my local indie shop—nothing on shelf. You might get lucky with a used copy seller on Amazon Marketplace or AbeBooks, but prices were inflated when I looked.

Honestly, for home use, I'd just grab the Kindle version. It's a quick, compelling read, the kind you finish in a weekend, so a permanent hardcover isn't super necessary. The premise is fun—a woman receives notes predicting how long her relationships will last—but it's more of a binge-read than a display-piece novel. If you're dead-set on paper, setting a stock alert on Bookshop.org or checking Walmart's online book section occasionally might turn something up. I gave up and read it on my iPad; no regrets.
