“Hey Bernie,” he said, leaning against the counter. “Bernie, wake up,” he called louder. An unpleasant feeling turned his stomach. He gently patted the man’s shoulder, but rather than startle awake as Miles hoped, he fell lifeless to the floor. “Oh my god,” Milo shouted. He ran around the counter and held his fingers to the man’s pulse point, but the cold, stiff skin yielded no thrum of life. “Damn it, you were my only friend, Bernie,” he said.
