I think it depends on what kind of 'first romance' we're talking about. If it’s a sweet, supportive first love, the growth is often about learning to trust and be vulnerable, opening up a new part of themselves. But in a lot of the stories I gravitate toward, the first romance is a train wreck—a toxic boss, a manipulative rival, a forbidden obsession. That’s where the real, messy growth happens. The character builds emotional calluses, learns hard lessons about their own boundaries (or lack thereof), and often carries that baggage into future relationships. It’s less about blossoming and more about survival, which frankly feels more true to life for a lot of people.

Their growth isn’t linear healing; it’s learning to navigate a power dynamic, or discovering a capacity for vengeance or dark desire they never knew they had. The role of miscommunication is massive. So many plots hinge on a simple, easily resolved misunderstanding that spirals because the characters are too inexperienced, too proud, or too scared to just talk clearly. While frustrating to read, it's painfully accurate.

This portrayal highlights the fragility of first love. It hasn't had time to build the resilience and deep trust that can survive mistakes. It's a house of cards, beautiful but vulnerable to the slightest doubt or misspoken word. Popular novels use this to generate conflict that feels organic to the characters' age and emotional maturity.
