The prophecy’s reject
I watched quietly as a group of children ran around wearing crude animal masks, their laughter echoing.
One of them, a little girl barely seven, handed me a mask shaped like a fox. “For you,” she said shyly before running off.
I held it gently.
A fox; clever, quick, always surviving.
Maybe that meant something.
Mason approached me then, his own mask tucked under his arm, a wolf with silver markings.
He smiled softly, trying too hard to look unaffected, too careful in that way he’d been since we agreed things between us would stay strictly platonic.
