"If you hate me so much, just let me go! Let me go back to my father."
The words tore out of her, desperate and raw. For a heartbeat, she almost believed he might hesitate.
Julian laughed.
It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t amused. It was a dry, humorless sound that carried no warmth at all.
"Your father?" he echoed. "Silas Vance?"
He took a step back at last not to give her space, but to look at her more clearly, as though distance sharpened his cruelty.
"He’s already called me three times today, Mary," Julian said calmly. "He didn’t ask about you. He asked if the merger was still moving forward. He asked if the checks would still be clear."
