The city looked softer through the mist, like it, too, was trying to rest after everything.
I went straight to Emma’s.
She opened the door in jeans and a soft navy sweater, her eyes lighting up when she saw me. That alone made everything worth it.
“Hey,” she said.
“Hey,” I murmured, stepping inside.
She wrapped her arms around me and held on for a long moment.
“Everything okay?” she asked.
I nodded, but she knew me too well.
“Sit,” she said. “Tell me everything.”
We curled up on the couch, and I filled her in—Julian’s intel, the new leads, the names that still had to be crossed off the board. She listened without flinching, even when I told her about Roth.
