The cheers faded into awestruck silence.
Side by side, Evelyn and Hunter watched the sky ignite in celebration. Each new firework—scarlet, emerald, icy blue—splintered against the dark and scattered flecks of light across the shore, reflected in the gentle swell of the ocean below. The sound of the waves mixed with the music, the laughter, and the rain of glowing embers above.
Hunter slipped his fingers through hers. “Look at us,” he whispered. “Look how far we’ve come.”
She turned to him, tears glimmering beneath her lashes. “I used to think heartbreak was the end of everything. But now I know—it’s just the beginning, if you’re brave enough to keep going.”
