"Let's actually pick some. I'm thinking we should fill both baskets. We can make pie or something."
"We?"
"Well, I'll make pie. You can supervise and eat the filling."
I laughed again. "That sounds about right."
We moved through the orchard together, picking apples and tasting them and arguing about which varieties were best. Miles was team Honeycrisp, while I found myself partial to the Fuji— they were sweeter, less tart, the kind of apple that made you want to eat three in a row and not care about overfilling yourself.
The basket was getting heavy, filled with the apples we'd selected carefully, when Miles suddenly grabbed my hand.
