Just as he was about to step back inside, a red message was blasted on the world channel for all players to see.

I found the nearest cyber cafe on my phone and started walking before I could change my mind. The cafe was small and hot. Old computers lined the walls and a ceiling fan made a clicking sound every time it turned. I paid for one hour and sat down. I stared at the screen for a while, then I started typing. I am willing to enter a marriage contract for one year in exchange for money for a medical emergency. I read it over three times. Then I created an anonymous email address and posted the message on a business forum where wealthy people sometimes posted for private arrangements and personal assistants.

She didn’t want to commit to it fully on account of her recently recovered body and memory but she was stripped of the choice. The Internet cafe Caroline opted for was a bit expensive, but the location had fleshed out amenities that Caroline felt won’t die out on her in the middle of the night. Furthermore, it provided the service of isolated rooms which meant that she won’t be rudely disturbed. As the computer screen came alive, Caroline took a gulp of her water and she immersed herself into the IT world that she was once intimate with.

They found a different kind of refuge: a 24-hour internet café in the basement of a student district, a grimy, neon-lit cave smelling of stale energy drinks and despair. It was a place of digital ghosts, where no one asked questions or looked up from their screens. They claimed a corner booth, thawing their frozen hands on the warm sides of ancient, humming CPUs. The stolen cryptographic key was a live wire in Sabe’s pocket. The Meridian was a dragon they had named. But the path forward was a blinding whiteout.

The air inside was cooler, quieter, until it wasn’t. Behind the thick walls and fake business front, the real cafe came to life. Rows of high-end machines lit up the space, their screens flashing codes, servers, dark web forums, and untraceable wallets. This wasn’t some teen hacker fantasy. This was the real deal. And these people didn’t play around. A guy with shoulder-length dreads looked up and smirked. “Jayden Turner,” he said, leaning back in his chair. “Haven’t seen you here in a long time.”

Damian said, leading me to a rarely used server room hidden behind a bookcase. He quickly booted up a small, older laptop. “This is old, isolated hardware. I’m setting up a private, peer to peer encrypted chat. It won’t connect to the regular Richard network.
