“Why was I demoted?”
Ethan glanced between them before quietly exiting, shutting the door behind him.
Vernon finally raised his head, his gaze piercing. “Because you’re no longer needed.”
Her lips parted slightly, as if struggling to process his words. “But—”
“As you may know,” Vernon continued, standing from his chair, “failures must be discarded.”
He stepped closer, each movement slow and calculated. The air between them grew thick, his cold presence suffocating.
“And you,” he murmured, his face just inches from hers, “have failed—miserably.”
