FIFTEEN I crouched at the edge of those blueberry bushes, quietly afraid. Jake left his bike with me, hoisted his backpack over his shoulder, hefted his hammer once more and melted into the darkness soundlessly like a cat. I couldn’t help but shiver, thinking about Dad saying James Burns could do the same thing as a kid. That’s why he’d been picked to be a Green Beret, because he could fade into the misty Cambodian jungles like he’d never been there at all. Here Jake was, doing the same, leaving me alone. The night closed in around me, darker than I’d ever seen it, so dark I could barely make out my hand.

Jake asked, pulling out a laptop from his bag. "I can't wait for Avery to meet you." I blurted out before I could stop myself. There was something comforting about him, his smile and his charisma really took me off guard. And I was glad he kinda liked Avery too. "Yeah me too." Jake smirked. **Bam! A new character. Jake! His presence filled the room, and I had to force myself not to stare.

He nodded as he picked up a small stack of papers and settled into a club chair that was on the opposite side of the carefully waxed mahogany end table that bordered the sofa. “Are there a lot of humans?” she persisted. Jasper shrugged as he focused his attention on the first paper. “I only met Cora and Bess,” he said. “Then, I was kept in the infirmary the entire time. This is a big place.” “It’s funny that he keeps humans on staff,” she mused. “Cora is his staff, correct?” Jasper looked up from his paper. “Why the interest in Cora?” he asked. Lila shrugged and gave a mock yawn. She didn’t want to admit to him that she’d noticed the way he’d admired Cora and was jealous.
