The smell of smoke and roasted marshmallows hung thick in the air, and the sound of music floated from a small speaker near the picnic tables.
Chelsea was the first to wave me over. She sat cross-legged on a blanket beside her friends, Grace and Rina, while Ethan and Liam tossed a football in the background. Connor was with them, laughing, a soft grin lighting up his face when he saw me.
“You made it,” he said, walking up.
“Yeah,” I said, smiling. “You didn’t think I’d skip out, did you?”
He tilted his head, eyes glancing down at my dress. “You look… nice.”
