“The knot comes undone and pulls the paper with it.” I followed her instructions and tugged. The wrapping fell away, revealing the gift. It was a beautiful, leather bound book with creamy, hand made paper pages. The leather was stamped with my name, and the symbol used to denote a healer. There was also a small box containing a beautiful calligraphy pen, with several small bottles of ink in vibrant colors. It was a magnificent gift, a healer's journal. It was something I was meant to fill with my observations and techniques. Something I would lend to other healers, and leave to my protege, perhaps, or donate to a pack library.

She pointed to a sleek watch on a stand and a display of AirPod cases. “This one’s our most popular. Simple, modern. And those cases are made from vegan leather, if that matters.” I picked both. The watch was silver, with a black strap. Not too bold. Just… him. The AirPod case was navy blue—clean, neat, nothing too loud. “Great choices,” she said, and I nodded like I knew that already. She wrapped them for me in matte black paper, tied with a gold ribbon. “You want a card?”

I cover my mouth with my hand to stifle another yawn. Despite being incredibly tired, I decide to jot down the recent events in my personal journal, my confidant that I made myself. The design is beautiful, the cover is a velvety hardcover with an image of a butterfly, in gradient colors of pink, blue, and yellow. The journal is completely covered, giving it the appearance of a small bag with a zipper. I end up falling asleep, and as I shift to my side, the journal slips from my lap.

Nyra’s POV I sat on the bed and placed Elaine’s book in front of me. For a moment I did nothing else. I just looked at it properly. In the library it had felt old and important. Here, on my bed, in this room, it felt stranger than that. More private. More dangerous. Like it did not want to be mistaken for a random old text preserved for curiosity’s sake. It was thick and heavy, yes, but now that I was alone with it I noticed more. The cover was not ordinary leather at all. Up close, the texture was wrong in a way that raised the hair on my arms. There was something inside her that was asking her to grab the book and read it – and she did. It was placed on the third shelf from the floor. It actually caught her attention, for it was not in line with the other books – it was slightly protruding from the shelf. The book’s cover was made of leather – she was so astounded. It was a little bit heavier and bigger in size than a normal book.

The leather-bound notebook was a small rebellion. It was not his workaday tablet, nor the family schedule on the kitchen fridge. This was personal, discretionary, analog. He had bought it at a busy, dusty stationery store in the Village, the kind that reeked of ink and old paper, light-years from the glass-and-steel reasonableness of his day-to-day life. Its cover was a dark, plush navy, blank and awaiting. It was heavily weighted in his hands.

There’s a soft thud, and the drawer on the nightstand pops out. Inside the drawer is a book with black bindings, along with a pen. There’s nothing else in the drawer, not even a picture. I pull the book out, turning it over in my hands. The cover is cool and leather. I’m sure it’s a journal of some sort, and I’m almost tempted to put it back, unread.

I ask softly, noticing the change too. Silently, Hardin nods just a little, shoulders tense as I take the gift from him. It's like he's dreading the thought of a gift from his parents, like it's going to be something horrible. Unwrapping the gift from his parents, I place the paper aside and open the lid of the box. The second I lay eyes on the gift itself, I realise what it is. Bound is soft tan leather, sits a chunky photo album. Figuring his parents wouldn't hand him a empty photo book, I decide not to open it.

A book with a leather binding. No diamonds. No large sums of money. No secret weapons or blueprints. Just a book. I felt stupid for a moment. Then I reached in and took it out. The weight of it was substantial and firm. The spine was strengthened with old thread and the leather has become smooth with use and age. I had never seen a single crest stamped on a cover before. A crown, dagger and an ember. All three combined to form a single horrifying symbol. I took my place at the desk and got it open. and started reading.

Older than anything I’d ever seen. The cover was wrapped in dark, cracked leather, etched with a strange symbol I didn’t recognize. A gold circle was embedded into the spine, and within it, a single quill rested delicate and ivory, as if plucked from something divine. Curiosity tugged at me. I reached for it. The moment my fingers brushed the surface, the book pulsed. A gentle hum, like a heartbeat, thrummed through my palm.
