When people attempted to stop me to talk, I waved and said hello, but I kept the course to my destination. As I'd hoped, there was no one around. I unzipped my backpack and took out the blanket I'd packed, careful not to accidentally toss the journal on the ground. There wasn't anything ornate or special about the cover itself, although I was certain it had been expensive. The leather was soft like suede yet worn like a jacket. While I assumed it was new, it appeared aged. The words on the pages screamed at me to read them, but even if Jude hadn't written what was inside, I'd still covet the book for its beauty.

It was wonderfully, messily alive. Liora found a stall selling parchment and inks. The old man running it had kind eyes and ink-stained fingers. “Looking for anything special, miss?” he asked. “A blank book,” Liora said. “The biggest one you have.” He smiled and pulled a heavy, leather-bound journal from under his counter. The cover was a rich, dark brown, and the pages were creamy and blank. It smelled of new leather and possibility. As she paid for it, her fingers brushed against the old one in her pack. It felt like saying goodbye to an old friend.

The book cover was made of thick leather with parchment pages tightly bound together with twine. With trembling hands, Anna opened the cover and began reading the first page, and the next, and the next. She was astonished to see the text was word-for-word the exact same as the manuscript her publishing company was about to release in a few days, plus several thousand years in the future.

But hope, like magic, has a price, and I am increasingly aware of that price. The book itself is a work of macabre art. The cover, made of dark leather that almost appears black, pulses with a life of its own, as if it were breathing. The leather is stained with deep shades of red, almost as though it has been soaked in blood over the centuries, giving it a sinister and throbbing appearance. As I flipped through the pages, reading her increasingly worrisome thoughts, the moonlight reflected off of shiny black leather. Sitting down the diary, I reached into the box, grasping the strange book. It was all black. When I’d first looked at it, the binding appeared to be leather, but it doesn’t feel or look like any leather I’ve ever seen. It was far too soft, similar to suede. The material seemed to be stretched over a symbol and as I circled my ring finger along the ridges, the padlock holding it shut popped open. “Not fucking creepy at all.”

' he thought to himself as he glanced at the book. Liam held the ancient looking book in his hands, its weight feeling strangely substantial. The leather cover was weathered, and the pages had an exquisite, aged quality to them. As he examined the book more closely, he realized that there were no markings or titles on the cover or spine, only complicated patterns and symbols that he didn't understand, etched into the leather.

As I was putting that back on the shelf I noticed an old green leather bound book. There is no title on the spine, but it has been loved. The leather is soft to the touch and from what I can see of the edges the pages are yellowed in places. There is a brown leather strap marking a page, so I take it to the chair I have been occupying and start there.

They had tried using the heavy strength glue to attach the pages to the leather but a few pages would not hold, so she had to go back and sew the pages into their books. While she did that, she had Asher cut little pieces of fabric out of a spare scrap of leather. With those pieces of leather, she sewed a medium sized pocket on the back inside cover of each journal and she sewed a tiny strap at the bottom of the page. Asher kept watching her curiously, clearly wondering what she was doing, but never asking. When she was done with the books, she took their quills and slid it in to the litle strap on the back. I try to ignore it as I grab a mug and start the coffee maker before settling down at the counter. Wary, I study the journal. Its pages are yellowed and brittle with age, as if time itself had gently woven a tapestry of sepia tones around its every word. The cover, once a rich, chestnut leather, has faded to a mottled shade of antique brown. It bears the scars of countless years, its edges frayed and corners worn, a testament to the passage of time.

Becky picked up the small bowl and examined it. “I think this was once a shell of some sort. Like a mussel or oyster shell, but look at the size of it. It must have been old when they harvested this.” Gemma set the twig on the desktop and then pulled the book out. For its size, the book was thick. A little larger than a man’s hand, and perhaps as thick as three of Gemma’s fingers. They did not make the book from paper, but the pages were much thicker. “Is this skin? I hope it's sheepskin and not human.” The cover was clearly leather, and the binding showed hand stitching. “This can’t be new. I’m afraid to open it. What if it’s not the grimoire?”
