I ran my thumb along the spine the way I had at the kitchen table that morning and it made the same sound. Like something that had been made to last. I opened it to the first blank page. The paper was cream and thick and when I pressed my palm flat against it I could feel the texture of it, the grain, the weight of something made properly.

I gasped at what was beneath. Lying there, by itself aside from the critters and dust, was a worn, leather journal. Slowly, I reached my hand down to grab it. Pulling it out, I blew the dust off. The layer of dust had made the journal look gray, but in reality it was brown and the pages were yellowed from age. I turned it over and noticed there was no back cover. It was bookended by a yellow page like the others inside the journal.

Her breath left faint ghosts on the surface of the polished glass table before her. The ledger lay there. It shimmered faintly, even though the light in the library was dim.

I murmured, wiping it clean with a tissue. The book was bound in black leather, its cover adorned with a golden chain that resembled shackles. It exuded an air of mystery and darkness. Curiosity piqued, I traced my fingers along the intricate chains. Swallowing hard, I attempted to read the title, but the words were unfamiliar. Flipping it open, I was met with pages filled with an unrecognizable language. I tried to decipher it, even searching online for clues, but nothing matched. As I flipped through the pages, my attention was drawn to a small bookmark tucked inside. Someone had been reading this.

Most of the covers were just black with huge fonts on the front covers in a language l didn't understand. I screwed up my nose as l looked further down in to the shelves. As l took a thin book from the last shelf , l noticed the difference in it from all the books. While most of the books had grey and yellow pages and we're in fragile condition , this book was a paperback with white pages untouched. It looked brand new and in English.
