They hissed and coiled, poised to attack at any moment. Lara took a deep breath and uncorked the vial the healer had given her. The potion’s scent was sharp, tinged with mint and something metallic. She rubbed it across her arms, neck, and face, feeling a cool tingle as it absorbed into her skin. Once she was fully covered, she took a cautious step forward, her senses on high alert.

She screamed in surprise as she felt Lucas's hand moving to her waist and tickling her until she kicked him away. She noticed some people looking at her in surprise, but they quickly looked away when they realized what had happened. "Stop it, Lucas!" Clara laughed as she pushed Lucas—kicking, scratching, and yelling in annoyance to get Lucas away from her. Lucas laughed as he saw her laughing. Their first laughter… where no arguments occurred. "Stop it!" She tried hard to stop Lucas, but he didn't listen. His slender fingers continued to sneak in and tickle her even though she had raised both her hands as a sign of surrender.

Fluffy on the edge of the bed. “Mommy, Uncle Brent snores,” she whispered with a mischievous grin. “I heard that,” Brent mumbled groggily, pulling a pillow over his face. Lara crawled up and jumped on him, erupting into giggles. “You’re awake now!” He peeked out from under the pillow. “And now I’m injured. I’ve been attacked by a five-year-old.” I sat up with a laugh, brushing my messy hair back. “Serves you right for sleeping in.”

Lara shook the box, putting it close to her ear. “It's so light. Is there even anything inside?” she mocked and the girls burst into laughter. My pulse quickened as she tossed the box around like it was a toy. My feet moved before I realized it. “Stop that–” Hannah snatched it from Lara and turned it over like she was studying it. Her eyes flashed with malice and I knew she was going to try something. As I reached for it, she let it drop to the ground. A sickening crack came from inside the small box.
