I accept the book and try to ignore Laurel's inquisitive expression, "Can I borrow it?"
"I've already checked it out for you, dear," Anne-Marie says, although it appears she's only now acknowledging Laurel. She grabs her hands and exclaims with a broad smile, "You must be a new friend of Alora's! My, my, dear, you're quite lovely. Almost like a mythical creature, a bit fairy-like."
"No," Laurel shifts uneasily and mumbles, "I wish..."
As we gaze at each other, I'm once again struck by the greenness of her eyes. She looks right at you, much like Lucien. Anne-Marie was right; there's an ethereal quality to her and everyone around her.
