He came back a few minutes later with cookies and served it round. They all started to eat and talk about school. I was so distracted by thoughts of Alya and what she could have gone through that I only noticed the wolfsbane when I had already put a cookie into my mouth. As it spread through my body, I realized Josh had laced the cookies with wolfsbane. Whether they figured me out or not, I was about to find out.

Lily coughed, with her eyes wide as she tried to open the oven door without getting her face hit by the hot air. "Under control? It smells like you're cremating something in there. You didn't tell me anything about baking!" I couldn't help but clamp a hand over my mouth to stop myself from laughing. Lily glared at me. "What were you even making again?" I asked, stepping closer. "Cookies," she muttered, waving more smoke away. Her mum grabbed the oven mitts and pulled the tray out herself. The cookies... if you could even call them that... we're pitch black. Not dark brown. She was even happy. Lilac smiled and replied sweetly, "I'm not worth much, Miss. Is Mister going to catch some fish at the seaside? I know how to catch fish, too! Let me down quickly!" They crossed a road and walked further down. Lilac was eager to walk on her own when she saw the familiar beach. Laura couldn't resist her, so she could only let Lilac down. Lilac ran straight toward Curtis ahead of her and stood in front of him. She looked up at him with wide eyes and asked softly, "Do you want to catch some fish, Mister? I can teach you!"

After that, I’d walk away for good. Staring at his face, I breathed deeply in and out several times. Brigitte couldn't bear to see Darcy's attention on me, so she took his arm and said, "Darcy, Ginger has been spoiled since childhood so don’t let her get to you." Water was a code word for something else, and with Maria's desperation, she needed it. "I bring glass to your room," changed Lina's mind immediately. "Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you, Lina, you're the best," she left the dining room. Lina sighed and also left. Maya sighed. This was her chance to sneak out of the table, satisfied that everywhere was empty; her anxiety was affecting her, making her want to disappear. She shook her head back to the mission at hand.

Vance watched her disappear into the shadows, then held out his hand. “The drive.” Cedric held it up, then dropped it on the wet boards and stomped on it hard. The plastic cracked. The chip inside shattered under his heel.

Lily, too, had begun to apply her foundation, then paused like someone to whom something important had just occurred. “So now tell me," Lily said, breaking the short silence, a naughty expression creeping into her face while Scarlett stared back with a knowing look. “When are you finally giving that cookie to a boy? Is it going to be before college, or, let me guess, you’re saving the prize for the really big guys in graduate school? Maybe I should find you some big dick guy tonight at the club.”
