ANASTASIA’S POV The scent of gunpowder hung heavy in the warehouse air. Rows of armed mercenaries were arranged neatly, waiting for final inspection before being shipped. “These ones are new,” the supervisor beside me said, gesturing toward three men at the far end. “Fresh out of the northern base. Quiet but efficient. No complaints so far.” I studied them in silence for a moment, then gave a small nod. “Good. Make sure they’re briefed again on engagement protocols. No freelancing.”

"She's shaken but uninjured. The men are in custody." My legs did something unreliable. I sat down on the nearest surface which happened to be the library floor. "Mercenaries?" I said. "Hired. Not professional. The kind of people you find quickly when you need bodies without skills." Another pause. "Which tells us something about how quickly this was decided." "Caden," I said. "That's my assessment." His voice was even. "This wasn't planned over weeks. The men were hired within the last forty-eight hours. No connection to the European operation.
