The Mate Agreement
They’re cold, so I move deeper into the spotless, fancy kitchen with mahogany cabinets and marble countertops, intending to reheat the waffles, hoping I find a microwave when I turn the bend.
What I do find instead is Mila, sitting on the counter, drunk. In the dim light of the kitchen, she looks like a Hollywood actress during the golden age of Hollywood, ready to shoot a drunk scene. Mascara is running down her bloodshot, faraway eyes. A few hair rollers are still tucked in her curls, and she’s wearing elephant print pajamas, no bra, with an empty bottle of red wine on the counter before her, another bottle of Merlot in her hand. No glass cup either.
She’s taking swigs.
