In my mind, I could see the box engulfed in flames, its contents reduced to ash.

"You deserve better than 'fine,' Mom. The house is cramped, it's outdated, and you don't need to strain to get around. I want you comfortable." She seemed to be looking for the words, her eyes darting between me and Alexa. "You've already done so much, sweetheart. I can't let you—" "You can," I said softly. "And you will. You worked years doing everything for everybody else. It's somebody's turn to do something for you." Mom pressed her lips together, clearly fighting tears. "I don't know what to say." Just say you'll go see it tomorrow," I said with a small smile.

Mom said, as she shrugged. “I hate his guts,” I blurted. “What guts? The guts he had to ask you out?” Mom asked. “The guts he has to think he can get every girl he wants!” I yelled. “You can make him respect you, and maybe who knows, he might turn out to be your mate…ohh I can't wait for your birthday.” She said, a beam lighting up her face with hope. “It's still six months ahead.” I sighed, “And there's no way that jerk is going to be my mate.”

She is right, she has allies everywhere, and I need mine too. As the meeting finally turned towards more mundane topics, schedules and the weightier duties of our pack, I stared into the distance at my mother, who was now eerily calm, and for some reason, I could feel the shifts of the chessboard beneath us, anticipating every move yet to come.
