Cassidy's POV By the time I reached campus, the familiar ivy-covered buildings and manicured lawns felt surreal, like I’d stepped into a parallel life I’d temporarily abandoned and wasn’t quite sure how to re-enter fully. Students milled about in clusters, laughter floating through the air like confetti—conversations about weekend parties, upcoming exams, crushes that seemed so trivial now. A group of freshmen giggled over some TikTok drama, oblivious to the real storm brewing in my world. I envied them for a moment, their uncomplicated chaos.

Matt countered. Matt persisted in urging me to value the women in my life, a college bus pulled onto the campus, and a voice called out from behind me, "New batch." As the new college year kicked off, high school graduates streamed in to embark on their first year at our prestigious institution. Some exuded confidence as they entered the campus, while others were gripped by the fear of encountering me, fully aware of my reputation. For freshmen, discovering they were assigned to the same building as the seniors, and myself, was perhaps their worst nightmare.

The cafeteria is more like a silent and loud place. While some students stick to table manners and eat their food quietly, others find it difficult to do so. It was break time, after all, a time free of work, and the boring lessons, as well as the interesting ones. Rachael watched as her friends talked about their weekends, a feeling of deja vu based solely on her imaginations. I try my best to remain walking straight and tall to not look too weak or embarrass myself.

The next few days were pretty routine. I went to the school, did my homework, fed my cat, watched reality TV, and pretended I wasn't craving blood so severely my stomach always hurt. I also did a pretty good job ignoring the brothers and Cindy's phone calls and texts. But on Monday morning of the following week, I woke thinking I was going to die. Blood! Blood! Blood! The word pounded through my body over and over like a frenzied crowd at a fight club.

NEW STORY: CAMPUS LIFE August 27 It was an annual tradition on the campus of Burling College. At the end of summer, just as the leaves started turning brown, thousands of young freshman students would move into one of the campus' 11 dorms. Some came with their mothers and fathers and there were teary goodbyes, some came by themselves but all of them settled in to their first real step on the road to adulthood. It was in one of the almost impossibly cramped rooms of Thurberg Hall that Olivia Thornton was now standing having her own unique goodbye with her own parents.

“Tomorrow you’re the entertainment at our big party. Some girls are arguing over an assignment. Some guys almost bump into each other as they talk about football. Everything is… Normal. For some reason, I can’t stand it. Just a few nights ago I found myself tied to a chair in a warehouse, wondering if anyone was ever going to find me.
