By the time I turned, he had already made it out the door. That was when I knew that it was all hopeless. Trying to get close to him was hopeless. The very thing I didn't want to be bound to was what he wanted to bind me to and I had no objections. Now he was dead from an accident on a rainy night. I had been surprised that my young, merely 25 years old, healthy husband was suddenly dead, but the sadness was the part that I failed in. I just couldn't muster any of it, it was almost like hearing that a complete stranger was dead. Except the complete stranger this time was my husband.

Henry had always been scared of the dark, and I could not bear for him to stay alone in the cold morgue. The following day, while I was on my way to the crematorium, I received tons of calls and messages from Matthew. I ignored them all. I held my son’s urn close to me and started contacting both friends and family to tell them about Henry’s death. That took me an entire day. Once I got back to our rental house, I found my husband sitting in his chair. His expensive suit had been replaced with cheap clothes. The moment he saw me, he jumped forward to hold my hand.

I can't even explain the way I am feeling right now as I continued watching my husband die in silence. "No..." I said, hardly able to get my words out. My husband was being squeezed by the floor like a toothpaste. Even his bones pushed out. I felt hot tears on my face. My mind wanted to do something but my body didn't move. This continued till the hand had succeeded in pulling my husband's now empty corpse fully into the ground. The only thing left behind was all my husband's insides.

"You don't have to tell me. I'm just saying I notice." I told her the short version. Separated. One month out. Trying to figure out who I was before I became someone's wife and apparently not doing a great job of it. She nodded like I'd described something she knew. "My husband died 6 years ago. Dropped in the kitchen on a Wednesday morning. No warning, all sudden. just gone." She said it straight, no trembling in it. The voice of someone who had already done all the breaking down somewhere private. "I didn't go into my studio for a year. I'd walk to the door and then find something else that needed doing. Dishes. Phone calls. Anything."

But she shook her head, her eyes welling up with tears again. "No, my husband died of a heart attack," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "He couldn't handle the news of our son's death. He was devastated, and his heart just gave out." I felt a pang of sadness at her words. This poor woman had lost everything in a matter of days. She looked around the room, her eyes taking in the empty spaces.

I caressed the leaves of the little pine tree decorating the end of the corridor and walked into the grand space from where I could see the living room. From there, I could also perceive the aroma of delicious food. “I thought he was just bluffing. People were crying and smiling at the same time like he had been the sun, the moon and the stars all wrapped up together into a shining being called my husband the King.
