Cough, cough, cough. I cough until my face turns a deep, burning red. Nora quickly passes me a glass of water.
“Thank you,” I squeak, taking a long sip to ease the painful tightness in my throat.
“You are joking, right?” Ben interrupts, his voice flat.
I look at Nora, praying for a nod, a laugh, anything to indicate she’s pulling our legs. She doesn’t. She just shakes her head.
“No, I’m not. We cannot cancel this wedding. It’s disgraceful, embarrassing, and a massive financial loss,” Nora says firmly.
