Neon ink slithered under their skin, pulsing faintly in time with some rhythm I didn’t want to identify.
They were not drones. Not vampires. Just… people. Broken and welded back together by this place.
The leader—Wires—twirled a length of chain lazily, the end weighted with a chunk of broken concrete.
“Nice gear,” he said, eyeing our scavenged weapons. “And you made it down here without getting mulched. Impressive. Shame you won’t last long.”
“Maybe we’re here to join the neighborhood association,” Jax said. His tone was light, but I could see the way his shoulders had shifted—weight balanced, knees loose, eyes tracking angles and exits.
