I’m talking absolutely shameless books with shirtless men on the covers, morally questionable billionaires, ridiculous amounts of tension, and enough spice to qualify as attempted arson. The kind Kenneth used to wrinkle his nose at. “Those books rot your brain, Jo.” Funny. I don’t think the books were the problem. I’ve also rediscovered cheesy rom-coms and psychological thrillers, all the goodies that Kenneth never agreed to watch with me because they were “too stupid” (the romcoms) and “too complicated” (the psych thrillers).

I told him about the bookstore, about the customers who came in looking for very specific recommendations. Carefully, I slide the book from her lap and flip to the first page. It’s a romance novel. Women read about the kind of men they want, right? It doesn’t mean anything. It won’t hurt if I actually like the kind of guy she’d be into. It’d make our act more convincing. That’s all. I flip open the book and let my eyes skim the first few lines. She knew she shouldn’t want him. He was trouble, wrapped in a smile that made her forget her own name. I pause. That’s... intense.
