He’s standing across the room, silent, conflicted, looking just as lost as I feel. “This choice must be yours,” the Alpha King finishes. “No one else’s.” As he leaves, the room feels unbearably quiet. I sit there, my wolf stirring inside me, knowing one thing for certain. This isn’t just about love. This is about survival.

But I wished we could do more to help my wolf because, even with thorough training, I couldn’t feel any changes in my body. Aside from that, Laira gave me books that I could read. As much as I hated reading, I wanted to know more about the other species in the world, so when she told me this house had a big library and a wide variety of books, I got excited. Maybe I could find answers to my cross-breed nature. But then I ended up reading romance novels instead. And it was crazy that for every male lead, I always pictured Alpha Stone. I was finally convinced that I was really crushing on the grumpy old Alpha.

Grandma Daisy was the only one who ever gave me a hard time. The other ladies were happy with the progress report, and even more so at the prospect that Ava might be destined to be mated with a werewolf. The transition to her life as Alpha of the pack would be a lot easier if her partner was of the same race. I wasn’t surprised, however, to find Ava fast asleep by the time I returned to the hotel. While my darling granddaughter was still young, I tried to push her out into the world a little more, so she could make friends, and at least experience life a little.

“Why is it so dark? Please, turn on the lights, Anth.” I hesitated before pressing the soft buttons of the light switch and then the room brightened up. I heard her gasp first before my eyes took in the rose petals and unlit candles on the floor and on various pieces of furniture in the living room. My eyes scanned the room and spotted more rose petals, even the ones leading to the bedroom. The romantic setting of the place made my nervousness spike higher than before. “Did you do this?” I pushed every ounce of nervousness from my body and approached her then wrapped my arms around her shoulder. I placed my face against hers then kissed her cheek, feeling the softness of her skin and inhalin

That the heat crawling up my neck is from the sun, not shame. But I can’t help but care. Despite the dread filling my stomach, the scene looks like something out of a storybook. All I can see is Alexandra Russo sitting at the edge of that bed, shirt riding up to her belly, her scent filling the air. My cock throbs just thinking about her. Her. Not the one I told myself I’d always want. “I told you Russo’s back in town for one reason,” her voice is hoarse, breaking in the middle, “To use her, and not to love her…”
