“You should have left him in the dark.”
Lyra froze. Cael stood up in one fluid, unnatural motion, his posture too rigid, his balance too perfect. Beneath his boots, the crown-shaped channels carved into the dais flared with a brilliant, blinding light.
The child shouted from below, his voice echoing up the shaft. “Don't let him finish the circuit!”
The First King drew his broadsword, the steel ringing loudly. “How do we stop it?”
“Break the circle!” the child yelled, pointing at Lyra. “She has to break it!”
