she whispered, "false alarm. Not pregnant after all. I wasn't ready anyway."
"Thank goodness," Chloe murmured. "Now go enjoy yourself. Just remember..."
"I know, I know." They both laughed, looking more like sisters than mother and daughter, Salem at eighteen, Chloe barely twenty.
"I love him so much," Salem said, eyes finding Elijah across the crowd. She hugged Chloe fiercely. "Love you, Mom." Then she was gone, running into Elijah's waiting arms as he held her close, eyes shut in contentment.
