I pressed. He stepped closer. Close enough that I could see the tiny scar at the corner of his mouth. “Because some things deserve being burned.” He left me then, and I stood in the hush of the room with a pulse in my throat that sounded like a drumroll. The plan was set. Trapani’s night would hold its breath and then exhale metal and manifest. Some loyalties could be negotiated out of a map and a ledger. Some would require blood.

"I didn't mean to startled you. I'm Elsa. Future Beta of the blood fang pack, Alaska." Oh, she was American. She gave a nervous chuckle and added, "Not anymore. My father would never forgive me for eloping with my mate." I gave her a reassuring smile. "I'm Adrienne." She reached out and held my hand. "Kincaid," Liam was saying, trying to make his friend see reason. "From what I hear about the first duel your uncle had, he almost won your father." Kincaid shrugged. "Well, but he didn't win. And we both know my wolf is bigger than my father's. I'm also stronger."

“But he’s not invincible.” Vendetta’s voice dropped into a venomous whisper. “No, he’s not. Watch closely. I got my eyes on him just like I did to his precious mate” Adolphus roared as his claws raked through the chest of a Shadow Fang warrior, sending the hybrid crashing to the ground in a lifeless heap. Blood splattered across his silver-gray fur, but he didn’t falter. His paws pounded against the forest floor as he spun, slashing through another foe with deadly precision.

“I heard you are pregnant? One month? Two? It’s not visible yet so I wonder. I suggest you should just kill that child. Its father is dead, after all. You can bear mine instead.” I couldn’t contain my anger anymore. How dare he tell me to kill my child! How dare he! He should die today. His blood should spill in my hands. There is no forgiving for someone as evil as him. I flew towards him. The blade of my sword collided against his. Using my other hand, I gave him a heavy blow in his chest. He took a step backward and smirked as if it didn’t affect him even a bit. Another sword formed in his hand, now he’s holding two—both have miasma of evil.

His first words chilled the entire field: “I remember the first forgetting.” Silence. Then chaos. Sariah rose slowly. “What do you mean?” The boy looked at her not like a child, but like a conduit. “They called it mercy. They carved memory out of the oldest bloodlines and buried it beneath the roots. But it never stopped breathing.” The first shape began to pulse, a deep amber glow forming at its core. The second moved again, this time toward the crowd. Dain stepped forward. “This isn’t just a test anymore.”

Liam shifts into his wolf and prepares for an attack. Wade leaps towards Liam, who jumps to the side. They circle each other, looking for an opening, both lunging and missing. Liam takes the upper hand by leaping on Wade. Liam claws at him as Wade twists and gets his teeth in Liam’s hind leg, tossing him to the side. I can feel the claws marks slicing through my skin as they transfer. Blood soaks my tank top and drips down the back of my tactical vest.
