His movements were unsteady, as if the weight of his secret pressed down on every limb.
When he stepped into the booth, the wood creaked under him. I closed my side and sat behind the partition. Only a thin veil of carved lattice separated us now the space where sin met silence.
Outside, the rain grew louder, beating against the roof in wild rhythm.
I crossed myself quietly. “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”
“Amen,” he whispered.
“Go on, my son. Confess, and unburden yourself.”
