I jumped up, panicking. Shana's yelps of pain pieced my head as she and the wolf fought, rolling around in the snow. The black and white-and now red- Border-collie jumps up and run towards my dad, her tail between her legs as she cried out in fear and pain. Ash chased her a few feet, snarling aggressively until she was cowering behind my dad who was shouting and flinging his arms at Ash like that would make him leave.

The smell was stronger now—unwashed fur, hunger, and exhaustion. I pushed through a final line of bushes and stopped dead. The dog was huddled near the base of an old oak. It was a husky, but she looked terrible. Her coat was matted with burrs and mud, and I could see the sharp outline of her ribs through her thinning fur. She looked up as I approached, her bright blue eyes wide with a mix of fear and defiance. She didn't run. She stood her ground, her hackles rising as she stared at the massive wolf looming over her.

I pull my hand back to search, but the wolf starts back up again. "Give me a moment, alright?" I shoo him off and he plops down with his head down. "Angus, Apollo, Archie, Ash, Axel, Baxter, Bingo, Bruce, Bruno, Champ, Charlie, Chester, Chip, Coco, Dexter, Duke, Eddie, Felix, Frankie, Freddy, George, Griffin, Hunter, Kane, King, Lenny, Logan, Marty, Max, Milo, Nelson, Noah, Ollie, Oscar, Ozzy, Peanut, Pepper, Prince, Rambo, Rocco, Romeo, Sam, Scooby, Scout, Simba, Snoopy, Spencer, Spike, Spot, Tucker, Walter, Woody," I skip over the names as quickly as I can. I know for a fact I won't use common names, whether the wolf likes it or not.

Her eyes alight upon scattered sketches strewn across the surface, drawing her in with an irresistible pull. Picking up one of the sketches, she is met with the striking image of a wolf, its form captured in intricate detail. As her gaze flits to another sketch, a closer view of the wolf reveals its menacing features—fangs bared and saliva dripping, an embodiment of primal ferocity. A series of similar sketches follow, each portraying the majestic yet fearsome creatures in different poses. A furrow creases Rose's brow in puzzlement as she contemplates the artist's apparent fixation on these lupine subjects.

In the end, I think they turned out great. Not that I knew what the others were for but there was also a frog on a log, a humming bird and a fat Cardinal. The very last one I was drawing was for Arlo. He got those picture for us, or more for me. It was of a wolf. It’s head was downward with his teeth showing. The hair was standing straight up with a human skull under it’s paw. There wasn’t any flesh on it, just the bones. Originally, I was going to make it a dead rabbit or something but this seemed appropriate. Keeping this one black and white, kept some of the mystery alive. “Charlotte??” Waylon yelled as he was coming in.

My wolf won’t have this! ^~^

Jasper looks suspicious, but kisses her hand and waits to hear what she has to say. “Dad- uh, I-I mean, Mister Cirillo bought us a puppy to be friends with our wolves. His name is Mister Happy. He’s a Saint Barnyard and still in our bedroom.” Kara pouts to match Katie. Jasper suppresses a laugh at her mispronunciation. “He’ll be sad without us.”

POV: AARON I gently laid the she-wolf down on the ground, settling her close to the fire. Yulli joined her side, and I stood watch, noticing that both of them were still trembling from the cold. I shifted into my wolf form, positioning myself between them to keep them warm and safe. That was when Callie turned her body toward my fur, clutching it as if I were a stuffed animal. I felt a mix of tenderness and discomfort, while my inner wolf stirred with happiness at the contact.

My breath caught in my chest as I stared at Penelope and Carter standing beside a huge brown wolf. I was about to take a step forward but stopped in my tracks when Carter put his hands on the wolf and caressed it's fur. The wolf nudged Penelope and she giggled before she caressed it as well. I stood, wide eyed, as I observed the children playing with the wolf. Were my eyes deceiving me? The wolf growled when Penelope dragged it's fur a little too hard and that snapped me into action. “Penelope, Carter! Get away from it!” I shouted as I ran towards them and the wolf's head perked up and our eyes met for a second before he sprinted deeper into the woods.
