He chuckled, low and warm, and I pulled Levi away, keeping my pace fast. “Nanny—we take care of pussy—” “Kitten, Levi. K-I-T-T-E-N.” I said it slow, pressing each letter into the air between us. “Kitten.” Yakov snickered behind me, and I shot him a look that could curdle milk. Let him feel the fury of a woman who’d spent her life trying to be good—even if I’d once demolished a jumbo hotdog like I’d been starved for a year. He just nodded, grinning, and leaned to peer into the carrier Levi held. Inside, the kitten was curled tight as a fist, its fur warm and dark against the plastic, breathing in soft little puffs.

I’ll just be a mo. Carrie sighed; she looked down the side of the bed at Alexis’s shoes. Would his shoes always be under her bed? Shrugging herself into a pink bikini, she picked her stmbag, her floppy hat and went to the simdeck. Alexis sat with the kitten on his knee, stroking it from head to tail as it purred happily. The day he’d been to fetch it from the sanctuary, it had looked like a lost soul. The only surviving kitten of four, Jonathan had said. Alexis hadn’t wanted him to furnish him with the cruel details of how it ended

“It’s… fragile.” Her eyes widened, and she carefully untied the bow, her fingers trembling with anticipation. When the ribbon fell away, she lifted the lid slowly, and the box moved. She yelped in surprise, pulling the lid off completely. Inside was a tiny, fluffy calico kitten, a patchwork of black, gray, orange, and white. Her eyes widened as she grinned from ear to ear, she was instantly up on her feet, taking the kitten out from his arms to her embrace. "He's so cute" Mystique purred, rubbing her cheek against the kitten's soft furs. "And soft, just like a pillow" she giggled.
