Some of the words were a little foreign to me and yet I was still able to understand. "Alaric." But what made Siron's blood freeze was the illustration on the next page: Alaric lay in a coffin, but black tendrils grew from his chest, spreading and choking the people around him. For weeks we had tried to reverse the curse—through mirrors, blood sigils, forbidden songs. But none of it worked. Because we’d been trying to undo the spell. Not complete it. I turned the page over—searching for a name, an instruction, a loophole. Something. Anything. But there was nothing else.

He drops the satchel beside the altar. Inside it, the ritual components wait. Everything he’d stolen, bartered, bled for. Arwan unrolls the cloth and begins. Salt. Bone dust. A single black feather. One fingernail from a wolf. One tooth from a man. A sliver of silver so pure it burns his fingertips. The sorcerer doesn’t ask for simple things. His hand shakes slightly as he slices across his palm. Blood drips, thick and reluctant, into the center of the altar. The symbols carved into its surface begin to pulse faintly, as if breathing.

Whether this endeavor would be a sink or swim all boiled down to him for now. Unbeknownst to them, Chu Xun had already found the weakness of the enchantment yesterday. His "examination" now was just for everyone's benefit. Even so, Chu Xun needed the time to think. He needed a way to fully control this enchantment, not merely defeat it. The enchantment was constructed using Taoist sorcery and this double-gambit enchantment contained two parts: the outer part an enchantment designed to kill any intruders while defending its domain and the inner parts Chu Xun could only expect something more complex.

I punched three more times before it broke through. “There it is.” My eyes darkened with satisfaction. I grabbed the panel and slid it open. Inside were only two books. An ancient-looking tome, and a thick grimoire. I picked both up and quickly unlatched them before flipping through the pages with growing anticipation. Unlike the others, none of the pages were torn. I heaved a sigh of relief while a faint smile tugged at my lips. “Now, let’s see what you are,” I whispered. I scanned the titles carefully. The grimoire was titled Makisteia. The tome beneath it was Malkara Lyk — Vael Sorcery and Curse of the Wolves respectively.

He let that hang as he began listing them off, each word like a forbidden door being opened: “Blood. Gravity. Time. Law. Decay. Dreams. Bone. Memory. Sound. Reality.…” He stopped in front of Thorn, then gestured vaguely around the room. “These aren’t just rare. They’re unnatural. Personal. Dangerous. And beautiful.” Then he looked up, his voice light again—but sharp beneath. “Some call them Arcane Signatures. Others call them Curses.” He turned back to the board, the shimmering sigil collapsing back into nothingness.

Depending on the strength of the sorcery used and the weakness of the vampire observed, it might even work on fellow immortals. ‘Be careful of using it as a crutch, however. The sorcery takes a lot of energy and focus, so you’re better off spending your first hunts determining the rules that govern your curse. You’ll manage to get a feel for your type, eventually, and then you’ll be able to hunt more normally.’

As though in agreement, the golem’s shiny brows and eyelids twitched behind their icy prison. “You see that paper talisman on its forehead?” Sasha said. “It contains a sealing spell but it’s upside down. We need to turn it right-side up.” Aki focused on the yellow strip of paper with characters that spelled out: {Be Still, Unrighteous One}. There were also deity seals running down its length. “Oh, you mean that talisman just past the kukri blade, the trident, and the pair of sledgehammer fists?” she asked sarcastically.
