She sighs dramatically, clears her throat, and starts belting out some off-key rendition of Beyoncé’s “Halo.”
“Stop, stop,” I giggle. “You suck.”
“Told ya,” she grins.
“Then dance.”
She raises an eyebrow. “Even worse.”
I smile, and for the first time all day, it actually feels real.
She leans back against the headboard, glancing at the stack of books on the nightstand. “Okay then. Story time?”
I nod.
She grabs one—it’s some old fairy tale anthology—and starts reading in this exaggerated British accent that has me chuckling under my breath. Her voice is soft. I let her words wash over me as I lie there, blinking slowly, my lashes heavy.
