They nodded. “Yes,” one said simply. “Our mom said our dad is a superhero,” the other added innocently. “She said he’s busy saving the world.” The words pierced straight through me. “He doesn’t have time for us,” the first one continued, his voice small but steady.

“But why you? You’re the nicest mommy.” I kissed the top of her head. “I don’t know why she chose me. But I do know one thing.” I tilted their chins up so they could see my face. “No one is ever going to hurt me again. And no one is ever going to hurt you. I promise.” Adrian nodded solemnly. “Because you’re a superhero.” I laughed softly. “Maybe a little bit.” They snuggled closer. I held them until their breathing slowed and their eyelids grew heavy. Connor watched from the armchair, quiet, and his expression unreadable.

Heroic. I laugh softly, blinking away tears I didn’t expect. “Am I a superhero now?” I ask, ruffling his curls. “You always were,” he says with a shrug, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world. When he opened his eyes, they looked sad, yet resigned somehow. "We all have the same weakness?" For some reason, I felt like he was being straight with me.

"Do you think this is a marvel or DC movie or something? You think you’re green lantern? Spiderman? Thor? The Antman? Shazam? I could go on and on Robert, but my point is, you’re not a superhero Rob, trust me. And I have no inter— " "No, no I don't trust you. And if I take that box and whatever the hell is inside it, I don't become a superhero but my life doesn’t exactly remain unchanged… right? That’s what the goddamn comics say right? "After everything we've been through, do you decide to give up on him? I looked through the screen, still looking for answers. " Zachary is a real-life superhero" I ignored the tears, analyzing the folder titled "The Daughter of Lucifer". "People need someone like him to protect them, and I know he wouldn't want to risk maintaining the profession if he was still afraid of losing someone. I didn't give up on him, I just gave him a little push so that he could save people who can't defend themselves against themselves.
