Or rather, in a mere 23 years… World War 4 pushed the world to the verge of destruction. That’s when on the 23rd year, July 1st. We crest a rocky incline, joining the stream of refugees fleeing in the opposite direction of whatever cosmic horror now tears at the world behind us. Wolves. Humans. Children. Some barefoot. Some bleeding. All terrified.

The vampires are roaming everywhere, then humans will die. There will be a big war!" Vincent gave Anderson a picture of an apocalypse. "That's what I want, Dave. Dethroning the human."

We will soon know so let’s get back to the story. “Was anyone able to defeat them?” Lennon asked wanting to know if they can find that person and ask them to help them, or try to do what they did and defeat the demons. “Yes, Noah. But he is too young now and we can’t depend on him, he is a child.” Maya forgot to add that the original apocalypse was twenty years from now, so they won’t be able to relay on the book’s characters to help them because probably all of them are kids or teenagers.

The third day of the apocalypse was a study in desolation. The satellite uplink showed a world transformed, its familiar landmarks buried under ice and snow, its streets empty of life. The city was dead, its population reduced to a few thousand scattered survivors who huddled in basements and tunnels, their bodies struggling to generate enough heat to keep their vital organs functioning. The cold had killed the vast majority, their bodies frozen into grotesque sculptures that littered the streets like macabre decorations.

I remember when the first outbreak was reported, the infected were ripping people’s throats out. I always thought the apocalypse would have been caused by zombies but it’s not. Get this, the apocalypse started because of vampires and not the twilight kind of vampires. No these vampires don’t have glittery skin or look even remotely attractive. These vampires have rotten skin from the lack of food and their eyes are black bottomless pits. These monsters can go out in the sun without the fear of their skin burning. He looked at the carnage around him, his face a blank slate of shock. And that’s when it hit me. The final, fragile illusion of society, of order, of help, shattered into a million pieces. This wasn’t a riot. This wasn’t a temporary crisis. The men in biohazard suits, the chained gurneys, the bloody cough, the biting… the gunshot executing the infected. This was the end. The world wasn’t going crazy. The world was gone. This island, this hospital, this room—this was the new world. Shit. This is the apocalypse.

People battled the cold with one hand and each other with the other. Production had ground to a halt. Farming no longer existed, and resource extraction had ceased. Food and energy had become strictly finite. Wars were breaking out everywhere. Some took place between individuals. Others erupted between small nations. Food and energy remained the two forces that drove people insane in the apocalypse. "Good thing I'm not short on either." Cyrus exhaled slowly, grateful for his preparations.
