I laugh, sharp and breathless, and my vision blurs before I can stop it. The bandage is ridiculously oversized no accident. The skin beneath is flushed, healing cleanly. And the placement God. Just above his jeans, to the left, where muscle dips into that dangerous V. Exactly where my eyes always go. And there it is. I know that image. I drew that image. A crooked little heart. A badly scrawled Luca. The same stupid, intimate sketch I traced into the steam on his mirror months ago, never thinking it would last longer than the fog on glass.

I was glad about my purchase, and it gained me some respect from others in the project. My first idea was mostly in black, gray and white (no surprise there), a girl sitting on the ground somewhere in the school. Many crows above her head, attacking. She had her hands up, protecting herself from them. My imagination was that those blackbirds are the many problems, and the mean students that a student must endure during their time in school. I doubted that someone would get it, but I didn't actually care. I pushed myself to finish it today, so tomorrow I could paint the idea I sketched last night.

Taking it as a no, Josh did not pick the drawing up, but he was still able to get a good look at it. He could tell that it was a portrait of Zachary. Josh had to admit that Serenity had a gift for art. She brought Zachary’s portrait to life. Only thing was, she deliberately drew a heart outside Zachary’s chest, and it was tiny… Was she saying that Zachary had a tiny heart? Was that a lake or a river behind Zachary’s portrait? There were wavy lines along the shore. What did that mean? There was a ball too. Josh stared at the drawing and then at Serenity. Seeing that Serenity was scarlet on the cheeks and hazy in the eyes, he knew that she was out of it.

It'd take five to seven drawings to complete the entire story. I was working on the first drawing today. It was called "A Pleasant Encounter". To put it simply, the drawing showed an ordinary Tudor woman's fateful meeting with a talented young nobleman during a celebration in town. The two of them fell in love with each other at first sight. A beautiful love story would then unravel.

A hand again, opened flat, the claw at each fingertip drawn from three sides so you couldn't tell yourself you'd misread it. Then a run of pages on the inside of the thing, and those were worse. I can't read a word of that book. But a drawing of a heart is a heart, and the heart in those pages was wrong. Too big for the chest it sat in. Ringed around its middle with something the maker had pressed in heavier ink, the thing armored under its own skin.

I picked it up and took a seat on the bed, before flipping it open. It was filled with… drawings. Drawings so realistic, they told stories better than any picture ever could. A smile curved on my lips at the fact that Asher drew all this. On the first page was the picture of a woman, who reminded me of Jane—or perhaps it was just the fact that she had red hair.. I turned over to the next page. On it was the drawing of a boy, seated in a dark empty space. The third drawing gave me a pause. It was of a woman in a bathtub, her wrist split and blood gushing out of the wound.

hesitated for a moment, lowering her eyes to the notebook she held as though it were a shield protecting her from the world. How could she hand over a piece of her heart, represented by her words, to someone she felt such hatred toward? But she soon gave in. She quietly extended the notebook toward "Nancy", her movements hesitant, as though she wished she could take it back. "Nancy" took the notebook gently, as if she were handling a precious treasure. She looked at it for a moment before opening it and flipping through the pages, her eyes moving over the carefully written lines. A genuine smile appeared on her lips.

" I followed the direction of his finger. Ian's bedroom door was closed. The drawing he had taped there was still hanging crookedly on the wood. Two little stick figures holding hands, with a heart drawn between them. My tears finally fell.

No wonder Killian couldn’t look me in the eye this morning. I reach for the sketch pad Elara left by the nightstand. My fingers tremble, but I grip the pencil like it’s my lifeline. I don’t even think, I just draw. Symbols. Circles. Eyes with fire spilling from them. A wolf with a shattered spine. A crown that burns. A clock with no hands. My hand stops only when I notice the paper trembling beneath my touch. Not from me. From the floor. A low vibration hums through the wood. Like a warning. Something is coming.

“Come see! Ivy walked to Isla! All by herself!” Adrian stood. Picked up Isla. I stood. Took Ivy from Alex. “Show us,” Adrian said. Alex ran ahead. To the house. To the deck. To the place where the door drawing used to be. New drawing. Taped to the slider. Five hearts. Bigger. _Mama. Dada. Alex. Ivy. Isla. Home. Always._ “Alex did it,” Adrian said. Quiet. To me. “Five hearts. He counted right.”
